Your day, stop by stop
17:30 · Pickup, on an empty stomach
Your driver-guide collects you as the heat drops. The one instruction that matters: skip lunch. Six stops are coming and the first one is not shy.
18:00 · Regag on the pavement
First stop is a regag stand, where paper-thin bread crisps on the griddle and gets painted with cheese, egg or fish sauce and honey. You eat it folded, standing, within a minute of it cooking. This is Emirati fast food, decades older than the towers.
18:40 · The machboos house
Then a proper sit-down at a local eatery for machboos — rice cooked down with spiced chicken or lamb, dried lime and slow time. Your guide explains why this is the national dinner table.
19:20 · The subcontinent detour
Old Abu Dhabi ate from Kerala and Peshawar long before it ate from Paris. A canteen stop covers flaky parotta and a grill the city's drivers have argued about for years.
20:00 · Luqaimat, warm
Dessert is luqaimat — fried dumplings, crisp outside, soft inside, dressed in date syrup and sesame. They are dangerous by the dozen and sold by the dozen. Order accordingly.
20:40 · Karak at the window
The finale is karak — sweet, cardamom-heavy tea from a serving window, drunk leaning on the car like a local. Then a short, contented drive back to your hotel.
Insider tips
- Skip lunch. Everyone who ignores this regrets it at the machboos stop, which is stop two of six.
- Eat the regag within a minute of it leaving the griddle. It is a different, lesser food once it softens.
- Pace the luqaimat. They arrive by the dozen and the first three are the best three.
- Bring a few small notes. Everything on the tour is covered, but a second karak for the road costs next to nothing and you will want one.
- Ask your guide to type your favourite dishes in Arabic into your phone. Showing that note at any local eatery for the rest of your trip beats any app.
Questions, answered
How much food is this really?
A full dinner and then some, spread across six stops over four hours. Portions are shared and sized so you finish, but nobody has ever asked for supper afterwards. Come hungry.
Can you cater for vegetarians or allergies?
Vegetarians are easy — regag, breads, dals and luqaimat carry the evening well. Tell us about allergies when you book and we re-route stops around them; small kitchens cannot guarantee trace-free food, so severe allergies need a conversation first.
Is alcohol served?
No — these are casual, unlicensed local eateries, which is rather the point. In the UAE alcohol is served only at licensed venues, mostly in hotels. Karak is the nightcap here.
Is everything halal?
Yes, every stop is halal as a matter of course, so Muslim guests can eat freely without checking. The route also runs comfortably around Maghrib prayer time — your guide builds it in.
Is it suitable for children?
Genuinely — regag and luqaimat are children's food in the best sense, and the stops are short enough to hold attention. Child seats are fitted in the Carnival on request. Fussy eaters usually surrender by stop three.
What should I wear?
Casual and modest does it — shoulders and knees covered is respectful in the older neighbourhoods, and you will be in and out of the car all evening. Loose clothing is also, frankly, tactical.
What happens after you book

The evening before, your driver messages you on WhatsApp with the exact pickup time and their name.
On the day they are early, the water is cold, and the plan bends to you. Pay then, or in advance — your call.
