Dune driving in the cool morning light, sandboarding and camels before the day heats up. This is a fully private experience in Abu Dhabi: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and an itinerary that flexes on the day.

One price covers the whole vehicle for up to 6 guests — bring the family and the price does not move. Allow about 4 hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

The desert works on its own clock: light that turns from white to gold in twenty minutes, dunes that change shape with the wind, and a silence you can hear. We time every departure around the light, not the schedule — and your driver knows which crest to stop on.

Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

Your day, stop by stop

  1. 07:00 · Picked up in the cool of the day

Your driver collects you from the hotel while the city is still quiet. The drive to the dunes takes around 45 minutes to an hour, and the timing is the whole point of this tour: you get the desert in its best hours, with soft light and sand cool enough to touch.

  2. 08:00 · Tyres down at the edge of the sand

At the last patch of tarmac your driver drops the tyre pressures — the small ritual that turns a 4x4 into a sand car. You get a short, honest safety brief and a question worth answering carefully: how adventurous would you like this to be? The answer is adjustable all morning.

  3. 08:15 · The dune drive

Half an hour or so of proper dune driving — climbing crests, sliding down slip faces, carving along ridgelines with the morning shadows stretching long across the sand. It is exhilarating without being reckless. Your driver reads the dunes for a living and will happily dial the drama up or down.

  4. 09:00 · Sandboarding on clean slopes

Boards come off the roof at a well-chosen slip face. The technique takes about ninety seconds to learn and the falls are the softest in any sport. You take as many runs as your legs allow; the walk back up is the only fee, and it is non-negotiable.

  5. 09:30 · Camels, coffee and photographs

A short camel ride — the original desert transport, at the original desert pace — followed by gahwa and dates in the shade. This is also the photo stop, and the morning light is doing most of the work for you. Nobody rushes this part.

  6. 10:15 · Back before the heat wins

Tyres reinflated, air-conditioning on, and the drive home while the desert starts to shimmer. You are typically back at your hotel around 11:00 with the entire afternoon intact — pool, lunch, museum, nap. It is the safari for people who refuse to lose a day to one.

Insider tips

  • Answer the driver's 'mild, medium or wild?' question honestly — the drive is calibrated to the most nervous person in the car, and that is exactly as it should be.
  • Claim the front passenger seat if you are prone to queasiness; give it to the biggest thrill-seeker if you are not.
  • Go barefoot for sandboarding. Morning sand is cool, the falls are soft, and shoes full of sand are a souvenir nobody wants.
  • Take your wide shots in the first hour — by 10:00 the light flattens and the magic migrates into the shadows.
  • Book this for your first morning in Abu Dhabi if you are jet-lagged from the west. You will be wide awake at 06:00 anyway; you may as well be on a dune.

Questions, answered

I get motion sickness. Is the dune drive a mistake?

Not necessarily — you control the intensity. Tell your driver at the start and they will keep the drive smooth and flowing rather than rollercoaster-shaped; the front passenger seat also helps considerably. Eat lightly beforehand and you will very likely be fine.

Can children come?

Yes — this is the safari we recommend for families, because the morning heat is manageable and the timings suit small people. We fit proper child seats for the road transfer and the driving is moderated with children on board. Tell us ages when you book and we will set the tone accordingly.

What should I wear?

Light, loose clothing and sunglasses, with closed shoes or sandals you can shake sand out of — barefoot is honestly best for the sandboarding. Mornings can start surprisingly cool from November to February, so a light layer helps. Sunscreen on before pick-up, not after arrival.

Is this safe during pregnancy or with back problems?

The dune drive is not advised for pregnant guests or anyone with significant back or neck conditions — the movement is real, even in gentle mode. We can still bring you along and keep the drive to a minimum, or route you straight to the camel and coffee part. Be straight with us and we will be straight with you.

Is breakfast included?

Light refreshments — Arabic coffee, dates and water — are part of the morning. It is not a cooked breakfast, so eat something small before pick-up or let us know and we can suggest timings around your hotel's breakfast. If you want the full desert breakfast experience, we run exactly that as a separate tour.

Will sand ruin my camera or phone?

Only if you let it. Fine desert sand is genuinely unkind to lenses and charging ports, so keep devices zipped away during the sandboarding and any breezy moments. A simple zip-lock bag is the unglamorous accessory that saves a thousand-dirham repair.

What happens after you book

  1. You get a confirmation straight away, with the reference and everything included in writing.

  2. The evening before, your driver messages you on WhatsApp with the exact pickup time and their name.

  3. On the day they are early, the water is cold, and the plan bends to you. Pay then, or in advance — your call.
