LED-lit clear kayaks after dark — the mangroves like you've never seen them. A small-group experience in Abu Dhabi, run to a standard we would put our own name on — because we do.

Allow about 2 hours door to door. Departures are kept small, kit is provided, and hotel pickup can be added at checkout.

The specialist activity on this experience is delivered by our licensed marine operator, working under their own permits and insurance, with a PNW Tourism driver-guide looking after you door to door.

The Gulf here is calm, shallow and improbably turquoise — closer to a lagoon than open sea on most days. Expect skyline views from the water, easy conditions, and gear handled for you end to end.

Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

What it costs your group

AED 520 for 2 travelling

Your day, stop by stop

  1. 19:30 · An after-dark pickup

Your driver-guide collects you in the Carnival, typically after sunset, and drives out to the mangroves as the city lights fall away behind you. The darker the night, the better this tour gets. Moonless dates are the connoisseur's choice.

  2. 20:00 · Briefing on the sand

The guides from our partner operator fit lifejackets and run the safety talk while the LED kayaks glow on the beach like a row of lanterns. Paddling basics take ten minutes; no experience is needed. The group stays together throughout.

  3. 20:15 · Push off into the dark

You slide onto black water and the lit hull turns the sea beneath you luminous. The first few minutes are simply disbelief. The guide sets a gentle pace into the channels.

  4. 20:40 · The channels at night

Fish gather in the glow under your hull while the mangroves close in on either side, full of night sounds. It is quiet in a way daytime Abu Dhabi never is. Paddle softly and the wildlife comes to you.

  5. 21:10 · The lights-out pause

In a still stretch, the group often rafts up and sits for a moment in the dark — water lapping, stars out where the city glow allows. It is the part guests talk about afterwards. Then the hulls light the way home.

  6. 21:30 · Back to shore

Roughly two hours after pickup you are back on the beach, towelling off by lantern light. The Carnival is warm and waiting. Most guests are asleep before the highway.

Insider tips

  • Book a moonless night if you can — the darker the sky, the brighter the glow and the better the stars.
  • Keep your phone torch off. Night vision takes twenty minutes to build and one flash to lose.
  • Put repellent on in the Carnival, before the mangroves know you have arrived.
  • Stop paddling in the channels now and then and just listen. The splashes you hear are the wildlife you cannot see.
  • Bring a dry layer for afterwards. Damp clothes and an air-conditioned drive home is a rookie combination.

Questions, answered

Is kayaking in the dark actually safe?

Yes, done this way. The water is sheltered, every kayak is lit and visible, guides paddle with the group front and back, and conditions are checked before launch. If the weather is wrong, the tour moves — the dark is the attraction, not the risk.

Can children join?

Yes, in double kayaks with an adult, subject to the minimum ages our partner operator sets — tell us when you book. Be honest about your child's relationship with the dark; two hours is a long time to be brave. Older children tend to declare it the best thing of the trip.

What about mosquitoes?

Mangroves at night have them and we will not pretend otherwise. Repellent and long sleeves handle it, and out on the water it is far better than at the shoreline. Apply repellent before you leave the car, not on the beach.

Can I take photos in the dark?

The glowing kayaks photograph surprisingly well; everything else defeats most phone cameras. Bring a waterproof pouch, take a few shots early, then put it away. This one is better stored in memory than in megapixels.

What should I wear?

Quick-dry clothes with long sleeves — they solve sun-free mosquitoes and the evening breeze in one move. Secure footwear or barefoot on the kayak. From December to February the water is cooler than the city, so add a layer.

Do I need kayaking experience?

No. The kayaks are the same stable sit-on-tops used by day, the distances are short and the pace is gentle. If you can sit on a chair and stir a pot, you can do this.

What happens after you book

  1. You get a confirmation straight away, with the reference and everything included in writing.

  2. The evening before, your driver messages you on WhatsApp with the exact pickup time and their name.

  3. On the day they are early, the water is cold, and the plan bends to you. Pay then, or in advance — your call.
