Your day, stop by stop
07:00 · Away before the heat
Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel and points the Carnival east while the roads are still quiet. There is a proper coffee stop en route — the drive runs around two and a half hours, and we treat it as part of the day, not a penalty. Somewhere past the last exurbs, the dunes give way to rock.
09:30 · Into the Hajar
The road starts to climb and the landscape turns abruptly vertical — ochre mountains where an hour ago there was sand. We pull over at the big Hatta sign for the photograph everyone secretly wants. From here the air is noticeably drier and, in winter, genuinely cool.
10:00 · Kayaks on the turquoise
At Hatta Dam the water sits improbably blue-green in its bowl of rock. The permitted operator at the dam kits you out with sit-on-top kayaks and lifejackets, and you get a good hour of paddling beneath the dam wall and along the quiet arms of the lake. It is flat water and forgiving — first-timers manage fine.
12:00 · Lunch with a mountain view
We eat at a local restaurant in Hatta town — unhurried, generous portions, mountains out of the window. Your guide can order for the table if you want to eat the way locals do. Vegetarians are well looked after; just tell us when you book.
13:30 · The heritage village
Hatta's restored heritage village is the real thing: watchtowers, mud-and-stone houses and a falaj channel that still runs. Your guide walks you through how a mountain settlement actually worked — water, dates, defence — in about forty-five minutes. It is shaded, gentle walking.
15:00 · Lookouts, then the long road home
We take in a viewpoint or two on the way out — the dam from above is the best of them — and pick up local honey if the roadside stalls are trading. Then it is the easy cruise back, typically returning to your hotel around 17:30. Most guests sleep at least part of it; this is allowed.
Insider tips
- Go on a weekday — at weekends the dam draws half of Dubai, and the water is far quieter on a Tuesday.
- Get on the kayaks in the morning; the lake is glassiest before the afternoon breeze arrives.
- Bring a dry bag or a waterproof phone pouch — the dam is the most photogenic thing you will drop a phone into all year.
- The Hatta sign photo works best before mid-morning, when the sun is still behind you.
- Roadside honey stalls near Hatta sell the real local product — small jars travel well and make better souvenirs than fridge magnets.
Questions, answered
Can we swim in the dam?
No — swimming in the reservoir is not permitted, and the rule is enforced. Kayaking with lifejackets is how you get on the water, and honestly it is the better way to see it. If you want a swim in the mountains, tell us and we will discuss what conditions allow that day.
Is the kayaking hard work?
Not really. The lake is flat, the kayaks are stable sit-on-tops, and doubles are available so a stronger paddler can carry a lazier one. If you can sit and hold a paddle, you will be fine; the only common complaint is wet shorts.
Is this trip suitable for children?
Yes — it is one of our most family-friendly days out. Children wear lifejackets on the water and small ones share a double kayak with a parent; the operator at the dam sets any minimum ages on the day. Child seats are fitted in the Carnival at no charge — just give us ages when you book.
What should I wear?
Clothes you do not mind getting splashed, secure sandals or water shoes, and serious sun cream — the light off the water is strong. From November to March bring a warm layer; Hatta sits higher than the coast and mornings can be brisk. A change of clothes in the car is never a bad idea.
When is the best season to go?
October to April is prime — clear skies, cool air and the mountains at their sharpest. In summer we run the day early, do the kayaking first and lean on the shade, and it still works, but winter is when Hatta shows off. Rain is rare but when wadis run we adjust the route for safety.
How much driving is involved?
Around two and a half hours each way from Abu Dhabi, which is why this is a ten-hour day. The Carnival is built for exactly this — proper seats, cold water, your own music if you want it. The final stretch through the mountains is a drive you will actually enjoy.
