Learn to read sand and drive it — tyre pressures, recovery and dune craft in our 4x4s. This is a fully private experience in Abu Dhabi: your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and an itinerary that flexes on the day.

One price covers the whole vehicle for up to 6 guests — bring the family and the price does not move. Allow about 5 hours. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

The desert works on its own clock: light that turns from white to gold in twenty minutes, dunes that change shape with the wind, and a silence you can hear. We time every departure around the light, not the schedule — and your driver knows which crest to stop on.

Practicalities, handled: your driver's WhatsApp arrives the evening before with the exact pickup time; the vehicle carries chilled water and chargers; timings flex on the day if a flight, a nap or a whim demands it. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before travel, and you can pay on the day.

Your day, stop by stop

Pick-up · Classroom on wheels
We collect you and the theory starts on the drive out — how sand actually behaves, why momentum matters and why tyre pressure is most of the game. By the time you reach the dunes you know why, not just what. The training is in our own 4x4s.
Airing down · The ritual
First lesson at the sand's edge: dropping tyre pressures for flotation. You do it yourself with a gauge, because you will need to do it yourself one day. This ten minutes prevents most of the desert's stuck vehicles.
Flat work · Momentum and mercy
On easy sand you learn throttle discipline — keeping the car moving, turning without scrubbing speed, and never stopping in the wrong place. It feels simple. It is the foundation of everything that follows.
Dune craft · Reading the sand
Now the real terrain: climbing, cresting slowly, handling side slopes, and telling a firm wind-face from a soft slip-face. Your instructor talks you up and over each line before you drive it. Repetition builds the eye.
Getting stuck on purpose · Recovery
We deliberately bog a vehicle so you can rescue it properly — shovels, boards, tow points and safe strap work. Doing it calmly once here saves doing it desperately later. Watching is allowed; digging is encouraged.
Airing up and debrief
Tyres re-inflated, sand shaken out, and a debrief on the drive home — including honest advice on your own vehicle and setup if you have one. You leave with notes, not just memories. Around five hours all in.

Insider tips

Photograph the tyre-pressure numbers your instructor uses. You will forget them, and they are the single most useful thing you learn.
Morning sand is firmer and flatters beginners; soft afternoon sand teaches you more. Pick your slot by what you want from the day.
Bring your questions about your own 4x4 — the drive-home debrief is a free consultation if you use it.
Wear shoes you can dig in. Sandals and recovery boards are a poor combination.
Do this course before your first Liwa or Moreeb trip, not after. Everyone who books it afterwards says so.

Questions, answered

Whose car do I drive?

Ours — the course runs in our own 4x4s, so you can make mistakes in them rather than yours. If you would like coaching in your own vehicle, ask when booking and we will tell you honestly whether it is suitable for the terrain.

Do I need a driving licence?

Yes — a valid licence recognised in the UAE, and please bring it on the day. This is real driving on real dunes, not a passenger ride. Passengers themselves do not need one.

I am a complete beginner. Is this for me?

It is built for beginners; the progression starts on flat sand and only moves on when you are ready. Experienced drivers are welcome too — the instructor simply pushes further into recovery and advanced dune work. Tell us your level when booking.

Can my partner or family ride along?

A passenger can normally join in your training vehicle, and two licensed drivers can share the wheel — just tell us at booking so we plan the seat time fairly. Small children are better suited to our other desert experiences.

How physical is it?

The driving itself is not physical at all. The recovery module involves some digging in soft sand, which is genuine work — you can watch that section rather than dig if you prefer. Water and shade breaks are built in.

Does it run in summer?

Yes — unlike open buggies, the cabins are air-conditioned, so summer sessions are workable with an early start. The recovery section is kept short in the heat. Winter mornings remain the pleasant option.

What happens after you book

You get a confirmation straight away, with the reference and everything included in writing.
The evening before, your driver messages you on WhatsApp with the exact pickup time and their name.
On the day they are early, the water is cold, and the plan bends to you. Pay then, or in advance — your call.
