Two and a half hours south of the city the last farms give out and the Rub' al Khali begins — 650,000 square kilometres of dune sea stretching into Saudi Arabia and Oman. This is not the tourist desert; it is the real one, and it rearranges your sense of scale.

Liwa is a genuine expedition — around two and a half hours south-west of Abu Dhabi — so the day starts early in the Kia Carnival with coffee and a route brief. The reward for the alarm clock is arriving while the dunes still hold their morning shadows.

The Rub' al Khali is the largest sand desert on Earth, and its scale reads immediately: dunes rise past a hundred metres and the horizon is nothing but sculpted sand. Your guide talks through how the Bani Yas tribes lived along this crescent of oases — the story the UAE grew from.

You track the arc of Liwa's villages and date plantations, stopping where the palm groves meet the sand and at the old forts that guarded the wells. This is the ancestral homeland of the ruling families, and it feels nothing like the coast.

Questions, answered

How much driving is involved?

It is honest about five to six hours in the car across the day — this is the price of seeing the real Empty Quarter rather than a city-adjacent dune park. The Carnival makes the miles easy: chargers, cold water, and stops wherever a view earns one.

Is Liwa better than a normal desert safari?

Different, not just better. A safari is an evening of dune driving and a camp; Liwa is a landscape and a history lesson at a scale no camp can fake. Many guests do both — the safari for the fun, Liwa for the awe.

Can we climb Moreeb Dune?

You can walk on its lower flanks, and even that is a workout — sand this steep gives back half of every step. The summit ridge is for the motorsport events. Long trousers beat shorts for sliding back down.

Is there phone signal and are there facilities out there?

Signal holds along the oasis crescent and drops in the deep sand — treat the day as semi-offline and enjoy it. Facilities exist at the villages and lunch stop; your guide plans the gaps so nobody is caught out.

What should we bring for a full Liwa day?

Sunglasses, sunscreen, closed shoes for the sand, a light layer for the drive home, and a camera with space on it. Water is stocked in the vehicle all day. In summer, treat the middle hours as vehicle-and-viewpoint time rather than long walks.

Is the day suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes, with expectations set: the driving hours are real, but the vehicle is comfortable and every stop is optional. Child seats are fitted on request, and the walking can be trimmed to almost nothing without losing the views.
